PN2 Exam 1
TPN indications
- malabsorption, hypermetabolic state chronic malnutrition, prolonged NPO
TPN administration
- through central line
(PICC Line)
TPN nursing care
- gradually increase/decrease flow rate
- Change tubing and bag every 24 hours
- use micron filter on tubing
- monitor I&O, daily weights, electrolyte levels, blood glucose (every 4-6 hrs)
- -if unavailable, administer 10% dextrose in water until in arrives
- do not use TPN line for other fluids or meds!
- Monitor central line insertion site for S&S of infection (erythema, pain, exudate)
Functional incontinence
- the person has bladder control but cannot use the toilet in time
Reflex incontinence
- emptying of the bladder without the sensation of the need to void
Transient incontinence
- temporary or occasional incontinence that is reversed when the cause is treated
Overactive bladder
- occurs when the muscles of the bladder contract involuntarily even though the
bladder is not actually full enough to indicate the need to urinate
Incontinence management
- Bladder or bowel retraining
- Biofeedback
- Timed and prompted voiding
- Use of protective pads
- Skin care
What may complicate incontinence
- diuretics
- surgery
- constipation
