NR 706 Week 1: Nursing Informatics and Advanced Nursing Practice
Derived from your healthcare experience, describe the relationships among computer science,
information science, and nursing science from an advanced nursing practice perspective.
Nursing Informatics integrates the science of nursing with computer science, information
science and analytical sciences to help identify, explain, manage and communicate data,
information and knowledge in nursing practice. The most important reasons for
implementing informatics into nursing practice is to create an ease for accessing patient care
information and to provide continuity of care for the patient while allowing
interprofessional collaboration for better decision-making (HIMSS, 2019). The Electronic
Medical Record (EMR) or Electronic Health Record (EHR) has been noted to improve
quality, safety, and efficiency while helping engage patients and families in their healthcare
decision-making. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act implemented mandates on
all public and private healthcare providers to adopt EMR by January 1, 2014 or they would
lose Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements (Prasad, 2014).
