What is the definition of elimination?
• Excretion of waste products from kidneys and intestines
What are the different types of incontinence?
• Urine incontinence – involuntary loss of urine on a continuous/intermittent basis
o Can be transient (suddenly appears & lasts <6 mos), stress (stimulus causing ↑
intra-abdominal pressure), urge (voiding as soon as urgency occurs), mixed
(combination of 2+), overflow (chronic urine retention leading to overdistention),
functional (inability to reach toilet due to environmental barriers, phys
limitations, memory loss, or disorientation), reflex (do not experience urge
sensation), or total (continuous & unpredictable d/t surgery, trauma, or physical
malformation)
• Bowel/Fecal incontinence – inability to control passage of feces & flatus
What nursing actions and care is involved for each type of incontinence?
• Urinary – noninvasive, low-risk behavioral interventions, external condom catheter,
indwelling catheter, suprapubic catheter
• Bowel
o Note when most likely to occur and provide bedpan @ those times or @ regular
intervals
o Keep skin clean & dry using proper hygiene measures
o Change bed linens & clothing prn to avoid odor, skin irritation, & embarrassment
o Confer w/ MD about suppository or daily cleansing enema
o Indwelling rectal tube
