Module 6 exam

Explain two reasons why a woman with low levels of LH would not be able to become

pregnant.

Your Answer:

A woman with low levels of LH would not be able to become pregnant because LH

stimulates the release of mature eggs (ovulation)and LH releases progesterone which

facilitates egg fertilization and is a key hormone in the maintenance of pregnancy. Low

LH levels would cause problems or prevent ovulation and fertilization causing a woman

not to be able to become pregnant.

(1) LH acts on the ovary to cause ovulation to occur. (2) LH causes progesterone

release to facilitate potential fertilization of the egg and pregnancy. Progesterone

is a key hormone for the maintenance of pregnancy.

Question 2

5 / 5 pts

Would you expect a female to have testosterone in their bloodstream? Explain why or

why not.

Your Answer:

Yes. The adrenal gland produces opposite sex hormones so both males and females

produce all sex hormones but at different ratios. A male will have higher levels of

testosterone but a female will have some testosterone level in the bloodstream.

(1) Yes. Both male and female bodies produce “all” the sex hormones. However,

the ratios are different.

(2) The adrenal glands are largely responsible for producing this “opposite”

hormone that the ovaries would not.

Question 4

10 / 10 pts

Explain the concept of negative feedback and how it helps to maintain homeostasis.

Your Answer:

Negative Feedback is a way of turning off a hormone and keeping it at a proper level for

homeostasis. For example, the action of ADH (antidiuretic hormone) is to dilute the

blood. Once the blood is dilute, the hypothalamus detects that ADH is no longer

needed and turns off the secretion of AHD which restores homeostasis.
