1.      Cancer Treatment       

Cancer treatment is dependent on the type of cancer and how far the cancer has progressed.

2.      Common problems associated with cancer treatment include

infections, bleeding, pain, malnutrition, fatigue, and psycho social issues.

3.      curative surgery         

Removal of the cancerous tumor when confined to a specific body location

4.      palliative surgery       

Is performed to treat the problems that the cancer or treatment of cancer has created.

5.      prophylatic surgery    

Is performed to remove tissues that are not cancerous but can become cancerous.

6.      diagnostic surgery       Is performed in order to determine if cancer cells are present

7.      Reconstruction/Restorative surgery   

Is performed following treatment to restore the patients body function such as breast reconstruction following a mastectomy.

8.      Pre-operative care      

Ensure necessary test are performed such as blood work, EKG and chest x ray and ensure the patient has remained NPO for the required time frame

9.      Education       

Patient education regarding the type of procedure, post-operative, management to include any restrictions, wound care, signs and symptoms of infection, medication, follow up treatment, and follow up appointments

10.  Nutrition        

Ensure the patient has a consult for the dietitian to assess nutritional and cultural needs

Pain Control    Ensure adequate pain control by assessing a patients' pain level frequently and administering the prescribed medications.
