Preventing Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection in Hospitalized

Patients Abstract

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a healthcare-associated infection acquired in hospitals.

The urinary system is the most affected by the infection. Catheter-associated urinary tract

infection (CAUTI) is a special type of UTI where a Foley catheter is used to drain urine. The

paper provides evidence-based guidelines and preventive measures to reduce the risk of

CAUTIs. The skills, knowledge, and attitudes are envisioned to be used by care providers in

various medical domains performing direct patient care. Additionally, the guidelines

emphasize the quality of health care rendered to patients in hospitals as well as long-term

care equipment and facilities. Finally, the paper discusses the magnitude of practicing hand

washing hygiene for the purpose of quality improvement and patient safety in healthcare

systems.
