Acute pain
- short-term, self-limiting, often predictable trajectory; stops after injury heals
Allodynia
- experience of pain after a normally non-painful tactile (from clothing) or
thermal stimulus
Breakthrough pain
- pain restarts or escalates before next scheduled analgesic dose
Chronic (persistent) pain
- pain continues for 6 months or longer after initial injury
Cutaneous pain

Pain perception
- conscious awareness of painful sensations
Referred pain
- pain felt at a particular site but originates from another location
Somatic pain
- pain originating from muscle, bone, joint, tendons, or blood vessels
Visceral pain
- pain originating from the internal organs such as gallbladder or stomach
Android obesity
- excess body fat that is placed predominantly within the abdomen and upper
body, as opposed to the hips and thighs
Anthropometry
- measurement of body (height, weight, circumferences, skinfold thickness)
Body mass index (BMI)
- less than 18.5 = underweight
18.5-24.9 = normal
25-29.9 = overweight
above 30 = obese
Diet history
- a detailed record of dietary intake obtainable from 24hour recalls, food
frequency questionnaires, food diaries, and similar sources
Kwashiorkor
- primarily a protein deficiency characterized by edema, growth failure, and
muscle wasting
Malnutrition
- may mean any nutrition disorder by usually refers to long-term nutritional
inadequacies or excesses
Marasmic kwashiorkor
- combination of chronic energy deficit and chronic or acute protein deficiency
Marasmus
- results from energy and protein deficiency, manifesting with significant loss
of body weight, skeletal muscle, and adipose tissue mass, but with serum
protein concentrations relatively intact
Nutritional monitoring
- assessment of dietary or nutritional status at intermittent times with the aim
of detecting changes in the dietary or nutritional status of a population
