1. What therapy and its dose is started within 48 hours of a TIA or ischemic stroke?

- ASA 160-325 mg (ASA preferred over parenteral anticoagulant therapy)

2. Causes of sickling / Sickle Cell crisis

- infection

dehydration

cold weather

3. Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA)

- anemia resulting when there is not enough iron to build hemoglobin for red

blood cells

4. Treatment of iron deficiency anemia

- Prevention includes increases in iron intake but diet cannot treat IDA and

supplements are always needed.

PO ferrous sulfate

5. Monitoring for Iron Deficiency Anemia treatment

- Reticulocyte count 5-10 days after treatment starts.

H&H, ferritin 4 weeks after therapy starts and then Q3mo, then annually.

If H&H, ferritin do not stabilize, then look for alternate source of bleeding

6. Patient Education: Iron Deficiency Anemia

- Vitamin C with iron enhances absorption

Take in an empty stomach if able

Avoid dairy, calcium & antacids
