• Psychiatric disorders

o Schizophrenia

▪ Symptoms

• Positive- psychotic symptoms, delusions, Hallucinations,

disorganized speech, disorganized behavior, catatonic behavior.

• Negative- removal of normal processes. Decreased emotions, loss

of interest (flat affect- inappropriate response) Alogia (poverty of

speech)Avolition (decreased motivation).

• Cognitive- Affects – memory, learning, understanding. Subtle;

difficult to notice.

▪ Psychosis

• Antipsychotic medications ( DOPEAMINE BLOCKERS)

o Typical

o Introduced in 1952

o Phenothiazines

o Nonphenothiazines- adverse effects – decrease in WBC

count increasing risk of infection.

o Multiple side effects

o

o Atypical

o 1960s—available 1971 in Europe
