Psychopharmacology
- Pharmacological treatment has been used successfully in treating those with a mental
illness for over half a century. It is still unknown how some of these medications cause
changes in the brain. This treatment is directed at the suspected neurotransmitterreceptor problem and will be covered in more detail when the mental health disorders
are reviewed.
Defense mechanism purpose:
- safeguard one from stress and anxiety. They assist the individual in maintaining a
positive self-image by blocking feelings, conflicts, and memories

- Altruism: dealing with stress by reaching out to others
- Sublimation: Rechanneling drives on impulses that are unacceptable into constructive
activities
Negative defense mechanisms
- Compensation: emphasizing strengths to make up for weaknesses
- Conversion: Unconscious development of physical manifestations not caused by a
physical illness
- Denial: Refusing to acknowledge the real situation or feelings associated with it
- Displacement: Transfer feeling from one target to another that is considered less threat
- Dissociation: Creating temporary compartmentalization, or lack of connection between
the person's identity, memory on how they perceive the environment
- Identification: Conscious or unconscious assumption of characteristics of another
individual one admires
- Intellectualization: Events are analyzed based on facts without passion
- Projection: Attributing feelings or impulses unacceptable to one's self to another person
- Rationalization: Creating reasonable and acceptable explanations for unacceptable
behavior
- Reaction formation: Demonstrating the opposite behavior of what is felt
- Regression: Unconsciously retreating to an earlier level of development
- Suppression: The voluntary blocking of unpleasant feelings and thoughts
- Splitting: Demonstrating an inability to reconcile negative and positive attributes of self
or other
- Undoing: Performing an act to make up for prior behavior

Obtaining available information on clients from their chart, significant others, or other
health-care team members. The initial assessment begins once this information is
obtained. The nurse may become aware of personal response to client
Examine one's feelings, fears, and anxieties about working with this particular client.
(i.e. the nurse may have been raised with an alcoholic in her family, and may have
ambivalent feelings about caring for someone who is alcohol dependent.) All individuals
bring attitudes and feelings from prior experiences to the clinical setting. The nurse
must be aware of how those preconceptions may affect their ability to care for the
client.
