Electronic health records (EHR) are today's new health-care technology. Their
introduction has relieved some burdens faced by caregivers with increasingly complex patient
comorbidities. Many benefits of using EHR including improved safety, the ability to share
knowledge about healthcare in real time, better coordination of treatment, and improved overall
quality of healthcare. Such systems reduce healthcare costs, enhances access of care, and
improves quality of care (DeNisco & Barker, 2016).
Key Information
“Health information technology (IT) is to aid facilities with the ability to deliver quality
care improving outcomes and quality improvement (QI)” (“Monitoring Progress for Sustainable
Improvement”, n.d.). Quality infrastructure is important to support creation of QI capability in
various practices, this includes the staff, tools, and services needed to help practices recognize QI
needs, develop skills, and participate in ongoing QI programs. (Taylor et al., 2018).
Role of Informatics
Health information technology (HIT) allows facilities to gather data monitoring the
effects of the new EHR in order to improve performance. Structured data entry is used by
various EHR programs in order to be analyzed. Tools used by HIT such as registries which are
interconnected and incorporated into routine practice workflows, decision support systems that
prompt decision-making consistent with higher quality care, and HIE to share health data within
a delivery system as well as at the community and the state levels (Higgins, et al., 2015). Health
information management (HIM) is used to determine how to collect the data and to ensure that it
