COMMENTARY

For the method mark in part (a)(i) there must be a complete and correct attempt to complete the square at

least once. This student has achieved this with

though their equation for the circle is in the required form, it is not correct so the accuracy mark cannot be

given.

In part (a)(ii) the student has not given the correct radius, however they could have followed through their

equation in part (a)(i). Initially they did interpret their equation correctly and since their

mark could have been given for

. Unfortunately, they changed their mind and cannot be given the first

mark. The coordinates of the centre of the circle are not correct, however the method mark in part (a)(i)

has been awarded and their equation for the circle is in the correct form, so they can follow it through and

they have done so correctly, thus gaining the second mark. An equation can only be followed through if

the values of a and b are both non-zero.
