POLI 330N WEEK 3
TCO ASSESSMENT
Question 1
5 / 5 pts
(TCO 2) As we have been discussing, throughout history, many people were
not fans of pure democracy. One of the reasons for this was the idea of
factions, as addressed in Madison’s Federalist No. 10. So what is the
definition of a faction?
Your Answer:
A faction as stated by The Federalist paper, "...whether amounting to a
majority or a minority of the whole, who are united and actuated by some
common impulse of passion, or of interest, adverse to the rights of other
citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community."
This meant that it would be a political gathering (otherwise known as a
political party) of people that were united based on a common case, they
also didn't care for the right of other citizens.
Refer to Paragraph 2 of Federalist No. 10.
Question 2
5 / 5 pts
(TCO 2) Why are factions a threat to a democratic
government? Your Answer:
Factions are a risk to the government because as a cohesive group, they
could destroy or dismantle levels of the government. The democratic
government which is based on voting could easily crumble if the faction was
able to gain control of the government; which would lead to a collapsing of
the government.
Refer to Paragraph 2 of Federalist No. 10.
