Week 3 Discussion 1– Tools of Organizational
Change
Select one of the following tools: the nine steps in Ackerman and
Anderson’s roadmap for change, Cummings and Worley’s five
dimensions of leading and managing change, or the three
components of organizational change. Explain how a leader could
use this tool in guiding an organizational change. Review several of
your peers’ posts. Respond to two peers who did not choose the
same tool as you. Discuss the similarities and differences between
the tools.
A true leader must be flexible and allow themselves to be able to adjust with
business needs. This ability to adjust allows you to assist others in viewing
the purpose of the change and for them to transition just as smoothly as you.
With this stated the most feasible tool a leader can use would be Ackerman
and Andersons roadmap. Just like traveling on a road trip you have a
destination set so you have a starting point and an ending point but you
must also think of the obstacles that come in between those two points and
how it affects the overall ability to reach the end. Below are the 9 steps to
the process after you hear the wakeup call:
I. Prepare to lead the Change
II. Create organizational vision, commitment, and capability
III. Assess the situation to determine design requirements
IV. Design the desired state
V. Analyze the Impact
VI. Plan and Organize for Implementation
VII. Implement the change
VIII. Celebrate and Integrate the new state
IX. Learn and Course Correct
Weiss (2016) stated, “the road map can be used as a “thinking discipline”
rather than a prescribed way of forcing an organization’s behavior into a plan
and timeline.” When we view these steps and these road map leaders are
able to maintain flexibility while navigating through the process of change.
These tools will allow a leader to have continuous planning until the best
process is executed. What I mean by this is if the plan is in place and we
have a process of how we will proceed but then once the plan is in process
and you notice there could be another way of executing the plan. During the
Analyze the impact the leader can determine how the plan is assisting with
the business goals and if it needs to be changed as the text stated this is a
road map and there are many ways to get to the same destination that
provides different results.
