Surgery (cancer treatment)
- Removal of as much cancer as possible
Radiation therapy
- High levels of radiation to kill cancer cells, control the disease and provide
symptom relief. Use locally often based on exposure and radiation dose.
External beam radiation therapy
- Radiation delivered from a source outside of the patient. Pt not radioactive.
Brachytherapy (internal radiation therapy)

seeds placed inside pt.
Chemotherapy
- Treatment of cancer cells with the use of chemical agents that damages cell
DNA and regulation. Systemic effects but can cause damage to normal health
cells.
Alkylating Agents
- Inhibits cell division
Antimetabolites
- Counterfeit metabolites that fool cancer cells impairs cell division
Antimitotic Agents
- Interfere with the formation and actions of microtubules so cells cannot
