You will need to know the following things about the medication listed:

1. Ibuprofen

a. Classification: NSAID

b. Therapeutic use: • Inflammation suppression • Analgesia for mild to moderate pain •

Fever reduction c. Adverse Drug Reactions: Gastric upset, heartburn, nausea, gastric

ulceration • Bleeding (less with non-aspirin NSAIDs) • Kidney dysfunction

d. Interventions: For clients at high risk for gastric bleeding, recommend a proton pump

inhibitor, monitor intake and output, monitor signs of MI

e. Administration: Oral

f. Client Instructions: Take with food, milk, or 8 oz of water to minimize gastrointestinal

effects. • Avoid alcohol. • Report persistent gastric irritation and signs of bleeding. •

Report any unusual or prolonged bleeding. • Report changes in urine output, weight

gain, or signs of fluid retention such as edema or bloating. • Report ringing or

buzzing in the ears, sweating, headache, and dizziness.

g. Contraindications: Teratogenic • Hypersensitivity to aspirin and other NSAIDS •

Peptic ulcer disease • Bleeding disorders (hemophilia, vitamin K deficiency)

h. Precautions: Older adults • Cigarette smoking • Alcohol use disorder • Helicobacter

pylori infection • Heart failure • Hypertension

i. Interactions: ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers, Anticoagulants,

glucocorticoids, and alcohol

2. Celecoxib (Celebrex)

a. Classification: second generation NSAID

b. Therapeutic use: Inflammation suppression, fever reduction

c. Adverse Drug Reactions: gastric upset, heartburn, nausea, kidney dysfunction,

cardiovascular

d. Interventions: Monitor for and repo rt gastric upset, heartburn, nausea,

diarrhea, or GI bleeding, monitor I and Os

e. Administration: Oral

f. Client Instructions: • Take with food, milk, or 8 oz of water • Avoid alcohol. • Report

persistent gastric irritation and signs of bleeding.

g. Contraindications: Severe hepatic impairment • Advanced kidney disease, anemia,

h. Precautions: • Alcohol use disorder • Heart failure • Diabetes mellitus • Hypertension

3. Acetaminophen (Tylenol)

a. Therapeutic use: fever, mild to moderate pain

b. Adverse Drug Reactions: Liver damage (overdose) • Hypertension

c. Interventions: Monitor for early symptoms of overdose/poisoning, BP

d. Administration: Orally
